ASTARI STRING QUARTET

About Us

The Astari String Quartet has been created in 2023. It’s a dynamic ensemble of young, passionate musicians dedicated to exploring new styles and pushing the boundaries of classical music. Since the beginning we are coached and supported by Institut Royal Supérieur de Musique et de Pédagogie in Namur. As a group of emerging artists, we are deeply committed to refining our craft and expanding our repertoire, always seeking to deliver fresh and innovative performances. Our collective ambition is to make a mark in the classical music world and its development.

ANNA POPIL
I VIOLIN

Born in Ukraine, Anna Popil is a violinist based in Brussels. She graduated from Lviv National Music Academy and continued her studies with Tatiana Samouil at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles.

LUIS GREINER
II VIOLIN
Born in Venezuela, Luis Greiner began his violin studies at the age of six, in the National System of Orchestras of Venezuela, he began orchestral practices from a very early age, which led him to work with great internationally renowned conductors and musicians such as Christian Vásquez, Rafael Payare, Paolo Bortolameolli, Lorenzo Gatto, Liviu Prunaru, Gustavo Dudamel, Martha Argerich, Sir Simon Rattle, among others. Likewise, he has had the privilege of receiving private lessons and masterclasses with teachers of international status such as Pablo Vásquez, Sergio Celis, David Nuñez, Federico Agostini, Nikki & Timothy Chooi, Gilles Millet, Kati Sebestyen, Marc Power, Igor Tkatchouk, Shlomo Mintz and Liviu Prunaru. He has also participated in important orchestral and chamber music festivals both in Europe and South America. Since 2023 he is a permanent member of the Young Belgian Strings. In May of 2024 he successfully passed the audition for the academy of the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, for the season 24/25.

He is currently studying in Belgium under the tutelage of Igor Tkatchouk and his assistant Caroline Poncelet, he also receives lessons and artistic guidance with Maestro Liviu Prunaru. Luis plays a 1787 Naderman Violin kindly loaned by the Anton Rubinstein foundation in Düsseldorf, Germany.
LUCAS AERTS
VIOLA

Lucas is a Belgian violist who started playing the viola at a young age with Wim De Cock at the podium academie Lier where he graduated as laureate. He started his studies at the LUCA school of Arts under the guidance of Marc Tooten with whom he studied 2 years. Starting 2024 he commenced his studies with Marc Sabbah at the royal conservatory of Mons. During his studies Lucas played with allot of different ensembles including Ataneres ensemble, Hermes ensemble, Zomeropera Alden Biesen and many others.

Lucas participated in masterclasses around the world with renowned artists including Mihai Cocea, Monique Heidema, the Zemlinsky quartet and many others. Since 2024 he is a fixed member of the Young Belgian Strings with whom he traveled to Venice and played with Liviu Prunaru, Silvia Huang and Lorenzo Gatto. Lucas plays on a Natali Carletti Carlo, Pieve di Cento from 1949 kindly lended to him by the Anton Rubinstein Foundation in Düsseldorf.
URSZULA MARKOWSKA
CELLO

She’s a cellist of Polish origins, born in 1997 and based in Brussels, graduated at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussels.

Urszula has performed at venues in Japan, Canada, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania and Slovakia among others. She has professional experience as a soloist, as well as a chamber and orchestral musician (La Monnaie / De Munt, Casco Phil, London Concert Sinfonia, Young Belgian Strings, Baltic Neopolis Orchestra, Primuz Chamber Orchestra, Lodz Philharmonic). In 2017-2019 she was a member of Vene Piano Quartet who has won the 3rd price during the XX Kiejstut Bacewicz International Chamber Music Competition. Group has been also rewarded with a special price – recital during the EMANACJE Festival organised by Krzysztof Penderecki European Centre of Music.

As a chamber musician she had an unforgettable opportunity to perform on the same stage with artists such as: Daniel Stabrawa, Paavali Jumppanen, Konstantin Heidrich, Tomoko Akasaka, José Gallardo, Jakub Jakowicz, Szymon Krzeszowiec (Silesian Quartet), Marcin Markowicz (Lutosławski Quartet). Her discography includes five CD albums (3 for the biggest polish label DUX) and several soundtracks to polish movies and short films. For many years she has collaborated with a sound engineer working at Lodz Film School, the most prominent film Academy in Poland. Thanks to this collaboration she has made recordings of the contemporary music for modern series and films. Despite the active concert life, Urszula is actively involved in organising cultural and artistic events. Since 2019 she is the member of the Foundation Primuz which promotes Polish culture and supports young musicians in developing their careers.
